Learn, Lead, Soar: Spotlight on Noor Academy
Nestled in Naperville, Illinois, Noor Academy has been a cornerstone of Islamic education since 1994. With its inspiring motto, “Learn, Lead, Soar,” the school has steadily grown into a thriving hub for young learners, offering a nurturing environment where academic excellence and Islamic values walk hand in hand. Under the leadership of Principal Haleema Syed, the school currently serves 225 students from preschool through fifth grade, with a growing vision to expand into middle and high school in the coming years.
Living Islamic Values Every Day
At Noor Academy, faith is not an occasional subject—it’s woven seamlessly into daily school life. Each morning begins with a community assembly where students recite Surah al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, morning adhkar, and the 99 Names of Allah. Two students are chosen daily to lead these recitations, and their efforts are recognized with certificates—an uplifting way to encourage confidence and participation.
The school also prioritizes worship and spiritual growth throughout the day. Daily dhuhr salah is offered for students in grades 1–5, and weekly Jummah prayers are led by young boys in grades 2–5, who deliver khutbahs prepared in advance. This unique opportunity builds leadership skills, public speaking confidence, and a deeper connection to faith. Students also learn shorter duas that help them carry remembrance of Allah into every part of their day, from studying to playtime.
As Principal Syed notes, “Our goal is for students to leave Noor Academy with strong academics, but also with hearts that turn naturally to Allah in gratitude and remembrance.”
Growth and Achievement
The past few years have been especially transformative for Noor Academy. In 2022–23, the school enrolled 80 students; by the following year, enrollment had more than doubled to 176. Today, Noor Academy educates over 200 students in a newly expanded 17,000-square-foot facility that reflects the growing trust and investment of the local Muslim community.
Academic recognition has followed this expansion. In 2023–24, two lead teachers received the ISBE Special Recognition Award for Teaching Excellence, highlighting the dedication of Noor Academy’s staff. In 2024–25, the school’s QAIS department earned the Award of Excellence for its commitment to program improvement-testament to the school’s pursuit of quality and innovation.
Supporting Student Well-Being and Character
Academic learning is balanced by strong attention to student well-being and character development. Noor Academy follows the PBIS framework (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) through a system called CHAMPS, which provides clear expectations and positive reinforcement to help students thrive both socially and emotionally.
The focus on character development ensures that students are not only high-achieving but also respectful, responsible, and empathetic individuals. The school community celebrates both academic and behavioral milestones, reminding students that success is measured in both knowledge and good character.
Partnership with Parents
At Noor Academy, parents are seen as essential partners in their children’s education. The school provides multiple avenues for family involvement, from volunteering at school events to offering input through a dedicated feedback email. Parent feedback is regularly reviewed by the school committee and advisory council, ensuring that families’ voices help shape decision-making.
Principal Syed adds, “I always welcome parents’ perspectives. Their insight is valuable in helping us improve and ensuring Noor Academy remains a place where students feel supported in every way.”
One parent, Suboohi T., reflected on her family’s experience:
“When I look back on all of my years as a parent at Noor Academy, I can honestly say it has been one of the greatest blessings for our family. All four of my children have grown up within this community, and the impact it has had on their lives is something I will always be grateful for. At Noor Academy, my children don’t just receive an excellent education—they are surrounded by an environment that nurtures their faith, character, and confidence as Muslims.”
Student Voices
The students themselves say it best. As two 5th graders shared:
“We love that everyone here is Muslim and so friendly. We love Quran memorization class, Field Day, and all the events for students and families.”
This balance of joyful experiences and meaningful spiritual grounding creates a school culture where students genuinely feel at home.
Looking Ahead
With solid foundations in place, Noor Academy is setting its sights on the future. The school is streamlining curriculum and reviewing best practices, starting with early childhood education and gradually expanding upward. In 2024–25, Noor Academy invested in a new ELA curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade, and has since added math and science upgrades. The long-term goal: to establish a robust elementary program that will pave the way for a middle and high school, insha’Allah.
