The Islamic Schools League of America (ISLA) is proud to spotlight Maarif School in Bloomfield, New Jersey, a valued member of our national network of Islamic schools committed to academic excellence and strong Islamic values.
Established in September 2017, Maarif School was founded to meet the growing demand for Islamic education in the local community. The school operates under the Educational Foundation, Maarif Foundation USA, which is affiliated with the international Turkish Maarif Foundation. Since opening its doors, Maarif School has grown into a thriving learning community serving students from PreK through 12th grade.
Located at 236 Hoover Avenue in Bloomfield, New Jersey, the school currently serves 258 students from approximately 140 families. Under the leadership of Principal Beyhan Dogan, Maarif School continues to expand its academic programs while remaining rooted in its guiding motto:
“Planting Seeds of Prophetic Character, Growing Future Leaders.”
A Growing Islamic School Community
When Maarif School first opened in 2017, it served about half of today’s enrollment and offered programs from PreK through 10th grade. Over the years, the school expanded to include 11th and 12th grades, creating a full PreK–12 educational pathway for students on its Bloomfield campus.
This steady growth reflects the trust families place in the school’s mission and the increasing demand for high-quality Islamic education in the region.
Looking ahead, Maarif School is preparing for an exciting new chapter. A permanent campus currently under construction in Wayne, New Jersey is expected to open in the 2027–2028 school year. The new campus will include expanded classrooms and enhanced learning spaces, along with new STEM course tracks at College Placement, Honors, and Advanced Placement levels, and additional STEM faculty.
Integrating Islamic Values into Daily Life

Families and educators gather for classroom culture night at Maarif School.
Maarif School incorporates Islamic values into the daily lives of students by embedding them in both academic programs and the overall culture of the school. Islamic principles are not taught as a separate subject alone, but are practiced throughout the day through worship, learning, and daily interactions.
Students begin their day with du‘aa and Qur’an recitation, and they are given regular opportunities to perform their daily prayers in congregation. Through Qur’an memorization, tajweed, and Islamic Studies classes, students develop a strong connection to the Qur’an and Sunnah while reflecting on how these teachings apply to their daily lives.
Islamic values such as respect, honesty, responsibility, and service are reinforced across all subjects and through school-wide expectations and discipline policies. Teachers strive to model prophetic character (akhlaq) and emphasize adab in classroom interactions, conflict resolution, and relationships with peers.
Students also participate in Islamic programs, assemblies, charity initiatives, and community service opportunities that encourage compassion, gratitude, and social responsibility.
By integrating faith with learning and daily practice, Maarif School aims to nurture students who are academically strong, spiritually grounded, and committed to living with integrity and purpose in their communities.
Academic Achievement and Opportunity

Maarif School continues to expand opportunities for its students through strong academic programming and partnerships.
One milestone the school is particularly proud of is the continued growth of its high school academic programs. Maarif School now offers more than ten courses approved for college credit through its partnership with Fairleigh Dickinson University, allowing students to earn college credits while still in high school.
The school is also an approved College Board school offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses and administering AP, SAT, and PSAT exams on-site.
Students have earned recognition through programs such as the National Merit Scholarship Program and the National Beta Club, where the school has received both School of Merit and School of Excellence honors. Maarif’s Model United Nations team has also received the Best Delegation Award.
Academically, the school is also proud to be completing the final stages of Cognia accreditation, marking another milestone in its continued development.
Supporting Student Well-Being and Character Development
Maarif School supports student well-being and character development through programs that nurture students spiritually, ethically, socially, and emotionally.
Islamic values are reinforced through daily prayer, Qur’an memorization and tafseer, Islamic assemblies, and halaqah groups that help students connect their daily behavior with the teachings of Islam.
Students are also given opportunities to grow through leadership and service programs such as the Beta Club and Student Government Association, which organize community service projects and charitable initiatives including food, clothing, and sadaqah drives.
School events such as Islamic programs, Qur’an competitions, and spirit weeks further promote confidence, teamwork, and a sense of community.
The school also prioritizes student well-being by maintaining a safe and supportive environment. Counseling support, regular check-ins, and small group guidance are available for students when needed, including referrals to the school’s Sheikh. Anti-bullying efforts, restorative discipline practices, and strong communication with parents help ensure that students feel supported both academically and emotionally.
Parents as Partners
Parents and families play a vital role in the Maarif School community. Through an active PTO and the parent “Chit Chat Club,” families collaborate with staff, support school initiatives, organize events, and help strengthen communication between home and school.
Their involvement fosters a strong sense of partnership and shared responsibility for student success.
Voices from the Maarif Community
“Our school isn’t just about learning; it’s about caring for each other.”
— Maarif School student
“First impressions, especially for children’s early developmental stages, are crucial. By attending Maarif, our young daughter is surrounded by loving staff who nurture her faith and confidence, not only as a Muslim, but also as a female in this modern world.”
“Knowing she spends most of her day immersed in strong Islamic and cultural values—without needing to supplement elsewhere—is a huge relief… Because the school is smaller and close-knit, it feels like a family here. The fact that our daughter has this entire school community behind her gives her confidence and a sense of shared belonging in this ummah.”
