Position Overview

Strive Islamic School is seeking a passionate and engaging ELA teachers for Kindergarten through 3rd Grade who are committed to building strong foundational literacy skills while fostering a lifelong love of reading, writing, and learning. The ELA teachers will provide systematic, explicit instruction rooted in the Science of Reading and implement the school’s adopted literacy curriculum, including UFLI Foundations for phonics and designated curriculum for reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and knowledge building.

Teachers are expected to create engaging, student-centered classrooms that support academic excellence while helping students develop a love for Allah (SWT), Islam, the Qur’an, and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through authentic and intentional Islamic integration and positive character development.

Primary Responsibilities

Literacy Instruction

  1. Deliver engaging, standards-aligned literacy instruction using the school’s adopted curriculum, including UFLI Foundations.
  2. Provide explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, grammar, handwriting, and writing.
  3. Utilize evidence-based instructional practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
  4. Differentiate instruction through small-group teaching, intervention, and enrichment to meet diverse student needs.
  5. Foster a love of reading by incorporating quality literature, read-alouds, discussion, and independent reading.

Student Growth & Assessment

  1. Assess student progress using formal and informal literacy assessments throughout the year.
  2. Analyze assessment data to guide instruction and identify students needing intervention or enrichment.
  3. Maintain accurate records of student growth and communicate progress and concerns promptly with families and administration.
  4. Collaborate with colleagues to develop instructional plans that support student success.

Classroom Instruction

  1. Create an engaging classroom that supports curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
  2. Incorporate hands-on learning, educational games, art, movement, technology, and collaborative learning experiences.
  3. Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying learning styles, abilities, and developmental levels.
  4. Maintain high expectations while fostering a safe, respectful, and encouraging learning environment.

Islamic Integration

  1. Naturally integrate authentic Islamic values, character education, and Islamic perspectives throughout literacy instruction using trusted Qur’an and Sunnah sources.
  2. Model excellent Islamic manners (adab), kindness, patience, honesty, and respect.
  3. Encourage students to see reading, writing, and learning as acts of worship and lifelong pursuits of knowledge.

Professional Responsibilities

  1. Participate in teacher evaluations and implement required recommendations, instructional modifications, or improvement plans with professionalism and timely follow-through.
  2. Maintain respectful communication with administration, colleagues, and families.
  3. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and school operations.
  4. Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events.
  5. Assist with lunch duty, recess supervision, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and other assigned responsibilities.
  6. Support school initiatives, fundraising efforts, curriculum development, and collaborative planning as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  1. Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree, or equivalent degree from an accredited international institution.
  2. Current college students may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  3. Commitment to the mission and values of Strive Islamic School.
  4. Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.

Preferred

  1. Previous elementary teaching experience.
  2. Experience teaching early literacy using evidence-based reading instruction.
  3. Familiarity with the Science of Reading, UFLI Foundations, Bookworms, or similar structured literacy programs.
  4. Teaching credential (preferred but not required).
  5. Knowledge of differentiated instruction and California academic standards.

Employment Requirements

Employment is contingent upon:

  1. Successful California Live Scan fingerprint clearance and background check.
  2. TB clearance.
  3. Verification of educational credentials.
  4. Authorization to work in the United States.
  5. Successful professional reference checks (minimum of three references, including at least one current or former direct supervisor).
  6. Agreement to comply with all school policies, procedures, confidentiality expectations, and professional standards.
