ISLA Retreat Sneak peek – Conversation with Imam Tom Facchine and Rasha El-Haggan

Navigating the Paradoxes of Leadership: A Sneak Peek Into the ISLA Leadership Retreat 2025

Islamic school leadership is never simple. Today’s leaders balance multiple demands, from classrooms to communities, budgets to spiritual guidance, and immediate crises to long-term vision. At ISLA, we believe leadership is not about resolving these tensions but navigating them with clarity, patience, and purpose.

We hosted a webinar, ISLA Retreat Sneak Peek 2025, featuring Imam Tom Facchine and Rasha El-Haggan, offering Islamic school leaders a first glimpse into this year’s theme: “Navigating the Paradoxes of Leadership.”

Why “Paradox”?

Leadership isn’t black and white. It’s full of tensions: urgency vs. patience, decisiveness vs deliberation, accountability vs empathy etc. These are not problems to solve but paradoxes to navigate. As Imam Tom explained, just as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) balanced mercy with firmness and strategy with patience, modern school leaders must hold multiple truths at once, constantly balancing opposing forces while guiding their communities.

The retreat dives deep into these paradoxes to give leaders both practical tools and spiritual clarity, helping them lead with confidence in complex environments.

The First Paradox: Urgency vs. Patience

During the webinar, we briefly explored the first paradox, Urgency vs. Patience. Leaders often find themselves weighing immediate action against the long-term impact of their decisions. Imam Tom shared stories from the Seerah to illustrate these dynamics:

  • Abu Sufyan’s journey to Islam: Before the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (PBUH) helped Abu Sufyan embrace Islam, not by confrontation, but through patient guidance, modeling leadership that values long-term transformation over immediate results.

  • Preventing a military leak: In contrast, the Prophet acted with urgency to intercept Hattab ibn Abi Balta’s attempt to reveal Muslim army movements, showing that decisive action is necessary when immediate risks threaten the community.

These examples highlighted a key takeaway: leadership is about navigating tensions, not “mastering” them. Leaders must cultivate awareness of their strengths and weaknesses, balancing immediate action with patience and foresight.

Reflection and Practical Tools

Rasha guided participants through a self-assessment tool, helping leaders reflect on their own tendencies toward urgency or patience. Combined with the Prophet’s example, this framework encourages leaders to approach challenges with emotional intelligence, strategic awareness, and spiritual grounding, skills critical for guiding schools and communities in today’s complex environment.
