About Washington International Academy
Washington International Academy (WIA) is a K–12 Islamic school in the Alexandria/DMV area dedicated to forming students of strong character, deep faith, and rigorous intellect. Our mission is to cultivate fitrah — the innate human disposition toward truth and goodness — through a curriculum that integrates classical Islamic pedagogy with contemporary academic excellence.
Our curriculum is concept-based: students are guided to uncover the underlying structures, relationships, and “big ideas” that connect mathematical topics across units and years, rather than encountering each skill as an isolated, disconnected fact. This approach mirrors our broader educational philosophy — rooted in adab (disciplined refinement), tarbiyah (holistic nurturing), and dhikr (mindful, purposeful attention) — in which understanding is built through reflection, inquiry, and conceptual transfer, not rote repetition.
Our secondary math faculty are essential partners in this vision within our Futuwwah Program, WIA’s high school division dedicated to forming young people of purpose, competence, and conviction.
Position Overview
WIA is seeking a Middle/High School Math Teacher to design and deliver a concept-based mathematics program spanning Grades 6–9. The ideal candidate is both a strong mathematician and a thoughtful educatior — someone who can help students see mathematics as a coherent, meaningful way of understanding the world, and who is energized by curriculum design rather than simply curriculum delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver a concept-based math curriculum that organizes units around transferable big ideas (e.g., structure, change, equivalence, proof) rather than isolated procedural skills
- Plan and teach engaging, rigorous lessons across assigned MS/HS math courses aligned to Virginia and national standards
- Use formative and summative assessment to guide instruction and support genuine conceptual understanding, not just procedural fluency
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners
- Integrate Islamic values, adab, and reflective practice naturally into classroom culture and routines
- Collaborate with colleagues on vertical alignment of the math sequence from Grade 6 through Grade 12
- Participate in ongoing curriculum development, professional development, and school-wide initiatives
- Maintain regular, respectful communication with students, families, and administration
- Sponsor or support a co-curricular activity (e.g., Math Team, robotics, tutoring) as capacity allows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field required; Master’s degree preferred
- Prior teaching experience at the middle or high school level strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience with or strong interest in concept-based / conceptual teaching approaches (e.g., Understanding by Design, Erickson & Lanning’s Concept-Based Curriculum, IB-style approaches)
- Strong command of secondary mathematics content across the Pre-Algebra through Precalculus/Statistics range
- Familiarity with and appreciation for Islamic educational philosophy and classical pedagogical concepts (adab, tarbiyah, fitrah)
- Excellent classroom management skills grounded in restorative, relationship-centered practice
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Comfort with instructional technology and learning management systems
