After one decade of service, Dr. Fawzia Tung is stepping down from the Islamic Schools League of America board of directors, where she served as secretary from 2016-2021.
During her tenure with ISLA, Dr. Fawzia enriched the ISLA community in a multitude of ways. She was the founding editor of the ISLA News, a quarterly newsletter that is electronically distributed and includes editorials, upcoming events, ISLA updates, as well as products and services offered by ISLA corporate members and affiliates. She also offered numerous professional development seminars at the ISLA Retreats and to individual schools, including sessions on Valid Assessments, Spaced Learning, and Putting the “A” in STEAM.
In addition to the vast knowledge and wisdom she shared at these sessions, Dr. Fawzia always had a lively story to share that would captivate and uplift her audience. Dr. Fawzia’s lifelong experiences accumulated from teaching and leading schools across the globe (from China to Saudi Arabia to her current home in Arizona, USA) have indeed given her a unique perspective on life. Last year, at the ISLA Leadership (Virtual) Retreat, Dr. Fawzia shared an inspirational message with educators on why she is resilient!
Dr. Fawzia may be most known for her inspiring nature walks, which she has led for the past seven years at ISLA Leadership Retreats. Whether rain or shine, Dr. Fawzia has trudged through the retreat grounds in the early dawn hours to prepare for the group’s morning hike, hiding inspirational questions and quotes under rocks, on sign posts, or affixed to treetop canopies, prompting participants to reflect on the connectedness we share with nature, Allah, and each other.
Dr. Fawzia’s intelligence, humor, and wisdom will indeed be missed as she moves on to pursue other dreams. We are so grateful to Dr. Fawzia for her decade of service. We pray for her continued success in all of her life pursuits!
