Webinar Recap:
Teaching Bioscience and Islam
in Islamic Schools
Over the past three years, scholars from around the world have been working diligently on creating a bioscience curriculum for Islamic school high schoolers that aligns with an Islamic worldview thanks to the support of a prestigious grant from the John Templeton Foundation led by Dr. Aasim Padela.
ISLA has been honored to work with this team of scientists, educators and curriculum experts, particularly in its final phase, to help disseminate the free curriculum to Islamic schools in the U.S. and abroad.
On Monday, November 18, we hosted a webinar to a global audience in order to:
- Reiterate the importance of teaching from an Islamic worldview
- Share information about The Bioscience and Islam Curriculum
- Inform attendees about an opportunity to participate in professional development on the curriculum
Professor Abdalla’s session on Islamic worldview laid the foundation for the remaining panelists, who shared more about The Bioscience and Islam curriculum, and what makes it so important for Islamic schools to incorporate into their high school classes.
Dr. Omar Qureshi, a scholar engaged in the curriculum development, problematized an actual example of a scientist who would ‘leave his Muslim identity behind’ when putting on his lab coat.
Dr. Aasim Padela explained why The Bioscience and Islam curriculum was created.
Sr. Aisha Basith provided participants with a walk-through of the curriculum on the website.
Br. Habeeb Quadri shared insights into how the curriculum was developed and tested with students in the Chicagoland area and in Malaysia.
Professor Mohamed Abdalla with the Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE) at the University of South Australia opened the session, clarifying what ‘worldview’ entails and why teaching from an Islamic worldview is critical. His slide deck can be viewed below:
