Addressing Child Sexual Abuse in Islamic Schools
ISLA hosted a crucial workshop on safeguarding children from sexual abuse within Islamic school settings. This session, held in collaboration with guest speakers from Al Fatih Academy, emphasized the collective responsibility of educators, parents, and school leaders in creating safe learning environments.
Key Discussion Points:
- The importance of vetting faith educators to ensure they are qualified and trustworthy.
- Establishing clear boundaries between teachers and students to maintain professionalism and safety.
- Recognizing warning signs of abuse and understanding the tactics used by perpetrators.
- Empowering children with knowledge of safe vs. unsafe behavior and trusted adults they can turn to.
- Reporting obligations for educators, emphasizing their role as mandated reporters.
- Providing parental guidance on choosing appropriate faith educators and ensuring transparency in their children’s learning environments.

✅ Schools will consider implementing the “No, Go, Tell” strategy, equipping children with a simple method to seek help if they feel unsafe.
✅ ISLA will continue organizing webinars and workshops on child protection for Islamic schools.
✅ Attendees will be invited to support ISLA’s initiative by contributing to the development of the Sexual Abuse Prevention Toolkit.
Workshop Highlights:
1. Understanding the Issue:
Qur’an Shakir emphasized the Islamic concept of Amana (trust) and the moral duty to protect children. She highlighted the prevalence of child sexual abuse and the need for communities to break the silence and take proactive steps.
2. Vetting Educators and Establishing Boundaries:
Guest speakers Ismail and Uzma from Al Fatih Academy discussed the importance of thoroughly screening faith educators and maintaining strict professional boundaries. They stressed that qualifications alone do not determine a teacher’s trustworthiness.
3. Recognizing Grooming and Warning Signs:
Uzma, a counselor, outlined common grooming tactics used by abusers, such as testing physical boundaries, secrecy, offering gifts, and using religious manipulation. She also provided a list of behavioral changes that may indicate abuse, urging parents and educators to stay vigilant.
4. Empowering Children and Parents:
Speakers stressed the need for open conversations with children about their bodies, boundaries, and personal safety. Strategies like the “No, Go, Tell” method and teaching children correct anatomical terms were highlighted as essential tools.
5. Legal and Ethical Responsibilities:
Educators were reminded that they are mandated reporters and must report suspected abuse to authorities immediately. Uzma clarified that even suspicions should be reported—without conducting personal investigations—to protect the child and avoid legal repercussions.
6. Supporting ISLA’s Child Protection Efforts:
Dr. Shaza Khan underscored the need for ongoing community support, both in funding and advocacy, to ensure the development and implementation of effective child protection resources in Islamic schools.
Final Thoughts
This workshop was a powerful reminder that safeguarding children requires collective effort and unwavering commitment. ISLA remains dedicated to equipping schools, educators, and parents with the tools they need to detect, prevent, and respond to child sexual abuse effectively.
We encourage all Islamic schools, educators, and parents to take action by implementing these strategies, sharing these resources, and supporting initiatives that prioritize child safety.
Together, we can create safer spaces for our children and ensure their well-being for generations to come.
